Evenings at 78-45-33

78-45-33 is an audiophile jazz kissaten behind an unmarked door in Salcedo Village, named for the three speeds of a turntable. Some ten thousand vinyl records line the walls, armchairs face a small stage under dim light, and a restored 1950s sound system does the talking, in the Japanese tradition where the music, not the chatter, is the point. Founded by audiophile Tonyboy de Leon, who runs the November Hi-Fi Show, with his cousin Jay Amante of Grey Market. The bar is open daily from 4:00pm to midnight, but the reason to come is the weekend, when the room hosts intimate live jazz, often played without microphones. Worth crossing town for, and a strong choice for a date.
