Why go

Understanding how Manila actually keeps its dead

Presented by
City Government of Manila
Date
1 Nov 2026
Good to know
The city publishes rules each October covering alcohol, loud music, bladed items and pets, so read them before you go. Roads around Blumentritt close and the LRT is the only sensible way in. Go on the morning of 1 November if you want room to move, and dress for heat, because there is almost no shade.

About this event

On All Saints and All Souls close to two million people come to the Manila North Cemetery to clean family tombs, lay flowers and stay the whole day. Families set out chairs and food beside the graves, children play in the lanes, and the mausoleums of Filipino presidents and film stars draw their own visitors. It is the clearest annual view of how Filipinos treat death as a family occasion rather than a private one.
