Beaches Near Manila: Where to Go for a Day, a Night or a Long Weekend

From the Batangas coast two and a half hours away to the grey-sand coves of Zambales and the surf towns up north, here is how to choose a beach by drive time, sand and season.

By What's On Manila editors

The best beaches near Manila for a day trip are in Batangas: Nasugbu and Anilao are about 2.5 to 3 hours from Makati or BGC, and Laiya about 3 to 4. For a weekend, Zambales (Liwliwa and the Anawangin and Nagsasa coves) and Bagac in Bataan give you quieter, wilder sand, while La Union and Baler are the surf trips that need two nights.

Updated October 2026.

Drive times assume a car from Makati or BGC in light traffic; add one to two hours on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon. More trips in weekenders.

Batangas: the closest beaches to Manila

Many of the best Batangas stretches sit inside private resorts, so where you sleep decides what beach you get.

Pico de Loro Cove, Nasugbu. The Hamilo Coast estate on the Nasugbu coast is the polished option, built around a 1.5-kilometre sandy cove. The country club is for members, so the way in for most people is a room at Pico Sands Hotel, a seven-storey hotel on the cove. Area: Nasugbu, Batangas. The hotel quotes about 2.5 hours from Manila, by the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and the Kaybiang Tunnel. Price: ₱₱₱. Tip: book a weekday night if you can; weekends fill with families. Good to know: this is a resort weekend; you will stay inside the estate.

Laiya, San Juan. Laiya is the long, cream-coloured beach on the Tayabas Bay side of Batangas, lined with public and private resorts. Club Laiya is a 24-hectare beach estate with pod rooms built from oversized concrete pipes and camper trailers by the beach, and it sells day tours from 8am to 6pm, closed Tuesdays. Its published rates for 1 October to 30 November are ₱1,000 per adult on weekdays and ₱1,150 on weekends, per a guide updated in April 2026; confirm before you drive. Area: San Juan, Batangas, about 3 to 4 hours. Price: ₱₱ to ₱₱₱. Tip: the water is generally calm and clear, but there are small stones and crushed shells where the water meets the sand, so pack water shoes.

Anilao, Mabini. Anilao is for people who want to put their face in the water. The shoreline is mostly rocky and the beaches are small, but the reefs and muck diving (searching sand and rubble for small creatures) are among the best in the country. Eagle Point Resort is the easiest base for a mixed group of divers and swimmers: sea-view pools, its own dive shop, and Sepoc Beach Center on Maricaban Island, 15 to 20 minutes away by boat, which the resort describes as the longest sandy shore in the Anilao area. Area: Mabini, Batangas, about 2.5 to 3 hours. Price: ₱₱ to ₱₱₱. Tip: the last 30 kilometres are slow and winding, so do not trust the map estimate. Our full guide: diving Anilao. Skip if: you want a long white beach to walk on.

Zambales: grey sand, pine-like trees and quiet

Zambales faces the open West Philippine Sea. The sand is grey because much of it is volcanic ash from the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, and many stretches are lined with agoho trees, which look like pines.

Anawangin Cove, San Antonio. A short boat ride from Pundaquit village brings you to a crescent of ash-grey sand backed by agoho trees and hills. There are no restaurants, only basic cottages, tents and paid showers, and electricity runs only from 4pm to 8am. A guide updated in April 2026 lists a ₱180 day entrance fee per person (₱350 overnight) plus a ₱20 environmental fee. Boats are hired per group from Pundaquit, about 20 minutes each way. Area: San Antonio, Zambales, about 3.5 to 4 hours to Pundaquit by car. Price: ₱. Tip: bring all your food and water, and take your rubbish back with you.

Nagsasa Cove, San Antonio. Further down the same coast, 30 to 40 minutes by boat, Nagsasa is wider and usually quieter than Anawangin, with the same grey sand and agoho trees. Camping is the main way to stay overnight. Area: San Antonio, Zambales, about 3.5 to 4 hours to Pundaquit, then the boat. Price: ₱. Tip: one boat hire can cover both coves in a day if you start early.

Liwliwa, San Felipe. A long, open beach with surf from about November to early March and water calm enough for swimming much of the rest of the year. Kwentong Dagat is a vegan glamping resort with nipa-style cabins, vegan food by the beach and surf lessons. Area: San Felipe, Zambales, about 3 to 4 hours. Price: ₱ to ₱₱. Tip: the last stretch is a sandy track, so go slowly in a low car. Our full guide: Zambales and Liwliwa.

Bataan and Subic: white sand to the west

Montemar Beach Club, Bagac. A private beach club in a 12-hectare cove with a 500-metre white sand beach, three pools and 89 rooms, plus kayaking and other water sports. The club is open to members, their guests and sponsored groups, so this is a trip to plan through a member or the reservations office. Area: Bagac, Bataan. The club quotes about 150 kilometres and 2.5 hours from Manila; from Makati on a weekend, budget closer to three. Price: ₱₱₱. Tip: email or call reservations first to ask what you can book.

Subic Bay. The easiest beach weekend for a mixed group: beaches, wreck diving and family attractions inside one freeport zone, about 2.5 to 3 hours away, and a good stop on the way to Liwliwa. See a weekend in Subic.

Quezon: island beaches to the south-east

Borawan and Dampalitan, Padre Burgos. Small islands in Tayabas Bay, reached by hired boat from the Aplaya area of Padre Burgos. Borawan has pale sand and tall rock formations; Dampalitan has the widest stretch of off-white sand and is the one for camping, with basic huts, toilets and a small store. There is little or no electricity, which makes for clear night skies. Area: Padre Burgos, Quezon, about 4 to 5 hours by car. Price: ₱. Tip: swim only inside the netted area at Dampalitan; jellyfish sometimes appear outside it. Good to know: Cagbalete Island, off Mauban further north, has wide sandbars at low tide, but its resorts follow a "no booking, no sailing" rule.

The surf weekends: La Union and Baler

San Juan, La Union. About 4 to 5 hours north. The main beach at Urbiztondo has a slow, forgiving wave for beginners, with cafes, bars and places to sleep within walking distance. Surf is best roughly October to March. Our full guide: La Union surf and cafes.

Baler, Aurora. About 5 to 6 hours east, over the Sierra Madre mountains. The main beach is one of the gentlest places in the country to learn to surf. Give it two nights. Our full guide: Baler for surf beginners.

Before you go

  • Pick by season. December to May is the dry season and the best time for Batangas, Zambales and Bataan. From around June to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the west-facing coasts; boats to the Zambales coves can be cancelled. March to May is the busiest period, so go on a weekday if you can.
  • Leave early, come back early. South to Batangas, avoid Friday 5pm to 10pm on the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway. North to Zambales and Bataan, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) near Marilao and Bocaue clogs on weekend mornings. On Sunday, aim to be home before 3pm.
  • Book ahead on weekends and long weekends. Resorts in Nasugbu, Laiya and Anilao fill up, and Cagbalete will not let you sail without a booking.
  • Bring cash. Many beaches, boatmen and small resorts take cash only, and signal is weak in the coves and on the islands. Some resorts accept GCash or Maya.
  • Pack for no shops. At Anawangin, Nagsasa and Dampalitan, bring food, water, a head torch, reef-safe sunscreen and a bag for your rubbish.
  • Check the weather the day before. When a storm signal is raised, boats stop running. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) posts updates online. For an inland plan B, see Tagaytay on a weekend.
