Christmas in Intramuros 2026: Lights, Simbang Gabi and Night Walks in the Walled City

The essentials

• Christmas 2026 programme: not announced when we checked on 4 November 2026. The Intramuros Administration (IA) posts a calendar of activities each month on its website.
• Last year's start: the Ceremonial Lighting of Liwanag Park was on 26 November 2025 at Plaza Roma, and "Christmas in the Walls" followed on 28 November at Fort Santiago and Plaza Roma.
• Simbang Gabi: the nine dawn Masses usually run from 16 to 24 December. Neither The Manila Cathedral nor San Agustin Church had posted 2026 times when we checked.
• Running nightly now: IA's October 2026 calendar lists the Pasig River Esplanade Bazaar and buskers daily from 4PM to 12AM.
• Getting there: Intramuros is in the City of Manila. Plaza Roma and The Manila Cathedral are at its centre, a short walk from Fort Santiago.

Lights at Plaza Roma

The Meralco Liwanag Park in Intramuros turns Plaza Roma, the square in front of The Manila Cathedral, into a Christmas display. IA says it is run with Meralco and One Meralco Foundation and is inspired by the Liwanag Park at Meralco's main office in Pasig.

Best for: an easy first stop, with the cathedral lit up behind the tree.

• 2026: not announced when we checked on 4 November 2026.
• Last year: lit at a ceremony on 26 November 2025. IA's December 2025 calendar listed Meralco Liwanag Park at Plaza Roma from 1 December into early January.
• What you see: the Letran student paper The Lance reported a 20-foot tree made from recycled meter covers and a restored mock-up tranvía (tram) made from recycled wood.

Christmas in the Walls and the lantern parade

Last year IA held "Christmas in the Walls" on 28 November 2025 at Fort Santiago and Plaza Roma. The Lance reported that the Intramuros Lantern Parade went along General Luna Street, through Plaza Roma, to Fort Santiago, with lanterns made by the Intramuros community, and that school choirs sang in a carol competition.

Best for: families and anyone who likes a parol (Christmas lantern) up close.

• 2026: not announced when we checked on 4 November 2026.
• Also last December, on IA's calendar: the Grand Marian Procession on 7 December 2025 at 4PM; Intramuros Evenings: Christmas Harmonies on 13 December 2025 at 7PM at Foro de Intramuros; and cultural shows at Fort Santiago and Centro de Turismo Intramuros on 20 and 27 December.

Simbang Gabi at The Manila Cathedral and San Agustin

Simbang Gabi is a novena of nine Masses before Christmas, at dawn or the evening before. If the usual pattern holds, the dawn Masses run from Wednesday 16 to Thursday 24 December 2026 and the evening (anticipated) Masses from Tuesday 15 to Wednesday 23 December. The Manila Cathedral

• 2026: times not posted when we checked on 4 November 2026.
• Last year: evening Masses at 8PM from 15 December, dawn Masses at 4:30AM from 16 December, and Christmas Eve Masses at 6:30PM and 8PM, as listed by GMA News.
• Where: Plaza Roma, Intramuros.

San Agustin Church

• 2026: times not posted when we checked on 4 November 2026.
• Last year: Simbang Gabi began on 16 December 2025, and churchgoers were given hamburgers and refreshments after Mass, according to the Daily Tribune. We could not find last year's Mass times from the parish, so check with San Agustin before you go.

Visitors who are not Catholic are welcome. Sit or stand with everyone else, and stay in your place during Communion if you are not receiving.

A night walk inside the walls

These are on IA's October 2026 calendar, the latest it had posted when we checked. Check the November and December calendars before you go.

• Pasig River Esplanade Bazaar: daily, 4PM to 12AM, on the Pasig River Esplanade.
• Esplanade Serenades: buskers on the Pasig River Esplanade, daily, 4PM to 12AM.
• Banchitto Bazaar: daily, 9AM to 8PM, at Plaza Roma and General Luna Street.
• Free Walking Tour: every weekend at 9AM and 4PM, from Fort Santiago and Casa Manila Museum. The 4PM slot is the one closer to dusk.
• Dalaw at Sayaw: every Sunday, folk dance at 4PM at Fort Santiago, and at 5:30PM at Plaza Mexico on the Pasig River Esplanade.

A simple evening: the 4PM walking tour, Plaza Roma and the cathedral after dark, then the Esplanade for the bazaar and the buskers. Our Intramuros guide covers the walls, museums and churches in more detail.

Where to eat

By day, the Philippine Eatsperience food market runs daily, 7AM to 5PM. IA's October 2026 calendar lists it at Plaza Sto. Tomas. Last December, when it was at Baluarte Plano Luneta de Santa Isabel, The Lance described its regional dishes, from Cebu lechon to Bacolod chicken inasal and Ilocos empanada.
