Giant Lantern Festival 2026 in San Fernando, Pampanga: Date, Tickets and Getting There from Manila

The 2026 date for San Fernando's Ligligan Parul was not out when we checked on 4 November. Here is last year's competition night and display schedule, clearly marked, plus how to get there from Manila and where to eat on the way.

By What's On Manila editors

The Giant Lantern Festival, the Ligligan Parul, is the City of San Fernando's Christmas lantern competition: barangays from the city face off with lanterns about 20 feet across, each one lit in patterns set to music. The 2026 date was not announced when we checked on 4 November 2026. We found no 2026 date from the city or from Robinsons Starmills, and the city government's website would not load for us. Last year the competition was on Saturday 13 December 2025 at Robinsons Starmills, and the lanterns stayed on display until 1 January 2026.

What you see on the night

Robinsons Malls, which hosts the festival, says last year's competition had 10 barangays, each with a lantern "measuring approximately 20 feet in diameter," brought to life "through synchronized lights, music, and movement." It called it the 117th Giant Lantern Festival and said Robinsons Starmills has been its home for 17 years.

Barangay Bulaon won last year. SunStar Pampanga reported that Bulaon took the revolving trophy and a P300,000 cash prize, with Barangay Sto. Niño keeping its first runner up trophy. The lantern in our photo is Bulaon's.

Last year's display schedule, for planning

If you cannot make competition night, last year the lanterns stayed up for nearly three weeks. This is last year's schedule, from Robinsons Malls. The 2026 schedule had not been posted when we checked.

  • 14 to 23 December 2025: Robinsons Starmills, lit daily from 6PM
  • 24 December 2025: between San Fernando City Hall and the Metropolitan Cathedral, 9PM
  • 25 to 30 December 2025: back at Robinsons Starmills, from 6PM
  • 1 January 2026: grand finale at 6PM

Display nights are the easier option with children or older relatives, since there is no judging to wait for.

When the 2026 date should come out

Politiko Central Luzon reported on 11 September 2026 that Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag had convened the first meeting to prepare for the 2026 festival. No date has followed yet.

Last year's competition was on Saturday 13 December, the second Saturday of the month. Do not book around that pattern alone. Wait for the city or the festival to post the night before you pay for a room.

Getting there from Manila

By car. Take NLEX north and leave at the San Fernando exit. Philstar has described Robinsons Starmills as sitting on NLEX "near the San Fernando Exit," so the mall is one of the first things you reach in the city. San Fernando comes before Angeles on the way north, so it is a shorter drive than the one in our Pampanga food guide, which puts Angeles at about an hour and a half off peak.

Robinsons said thousands gathered for last year's competition night. Leave Manila after lunch rather than after work, and plan to be parked well before dark. We could not find official parking advice for the night.

By bus. We could not find an official timetable for buses from Manila to San Fernando, so we are not naming operators or times. If you go by bus, confirm the route, the drop off point and the last trip back to Manila with the operator before you leave. If you plan to stay for the whole programme, a car or a room in town is the safer plan.

Where to eat

Make a full day of it. Pampanga is the province Manila drives to for food, and our Pampanga food trip guide has the stops: sisig at Aling Lucing in Angeles, a long Kapampangan lunch at Apag Marangle, and Bale Dutung if you booked a private meal well ahead.

A simple plan: eat your way around Angeles from late morning, then drive back down to San Fernando in the afternoon, so you are at Robinsons Starmills before the lanterns light up. For more ideas outside the city, see our weekenders.
