The best bars in Poblacion, Makati are The Spirits Library and Run Rabbit Run for serious cocktails, Bibio for natural wine, OTO for music on a proper sound system, and Tambai and El Chupacabra for a cheap, loud night that runs late. All of them sit within a short walk of each other, which is the whole point of Poblacion: you can start with dinner, move through two or three bars and finish with tacos without getting back in a car.

Updated October 2026.

Poblacion is the old town centre of Makati, a grid of narrow streets squeezed between Kalayaan Avenue, Makati Avenue and J.P. Rizal Avenue, next to Rockwell. The bars are mostly in converted houses and small shophouses on streets like Don Pedro, Felipe, Enriquez, Guerrero, Ebro and B. Valdez. Below, the picks are grouped by the kind of night you want. For the wider city, see our nightlife hub and the Poblacion neighbourhood page.

For serious cocktails

The Spirits Library is the most decorated bar in the district right now. In July 2026 it entered the 51 to 100 extended list of Asia's 50 Best Bars at No. 98. Open since 2019, the double-height room holds a deep collection of rare and vintage bottles, old glassware and bar books. 4963 Guerrero Street. ₱₱₱. Open daily, 6pm to 3am. Tip: it has been busier since the ranking, so call ahead for a table on Friday or Saturday.

Run Rabbit Run has been part of how Manila drinks since 2018, and it now works from a warmer, more grown-up room in Poblacion. The menu leans on fresh produce, spice and herbs, with signature drinks next to a seasonal list. It suits a date or a small group that wants to talk. Six Axis Center, 4347 B. Valdez Street. ₱₱. Monday to Thursday 6pm to 1am, Friday and Saturday 6pm to 3am.

Polilya opened in 2017, one of the bars that started Poblacion's turn into a drinking district, and since 2022 has run from a newer home on Ebro Street. It is the home of Engkanto craft beer, and the cocktails use Filipino ingredients, so it works for a group where some want a beer and some want something mixed. 5767 Ebro Street. Closed Monday; open until 4am on Friday and Saturday.

For wine, music and conversation

Bibio is a natural wine bar on the corner of Don Pedro and Jacobo, co-owned by Justin Apolonio and Vanessa Abat-Apolonio of the wine importer Some Love. The list of low-intervention bottles is wide, the small plates lean on fermented and cured flavours, and the room is cosy and relaxed, which makes it a good choice for a date or a small group. It often hosts chef pop-ups and wine tastings. 5659 Don Pedro Street, corner Jacobo. ₱₱. Good to know: the staff are trained to suggest wines by mood, so tell them what you usually like and let them choose.

OTO is the listening bar many of Manila's newer music rooms are compared to. A large audiophile sound system faces a wall of vinyl. In May 2026 it launched "Everything Is a Remix", its first full new cocktail menu in three years: 15 drinks built like music samples, each a classic followed by three variations. By day it runs as a listening café; the bar takes over in the evening. For more rooms like it, read The Rise of Manila's Listening Bars. Villa Caridad 1, 5883 Enriquez Street. ₱₱. Bar until 1am Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday, until 2am Friday and Saturday; closed Monday. Tip: arrive before 10pm if you want to hear the records rather than the crowd.

For dinner before the bars

Eat first. Poblacion has some of the best restaurants in Makati, and the bars are more fun on a full stomach. For more, see Where Manila Eats Well Now.

Lampara does modern Filipino cooking and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, the guide's award for good food at fair prices. Familiar dishes like laing come back reworked with French technique. It is in the same building as OTO, which makes for an easy two-stop evening. Villa Caridad 1, 5883 Enriquez Street. ₱₱.

Rekdi is the three-floor restaurant filmmaker Erik Matti opened in 2026 in an old apartment building on Pagulayan Street, with a bar on the ground floor. It is a good choice for a group dinner that rolls into drinks without changing venue. 5713 Pagulayan Street. ₱₱₱. Tuesday to Sunday, 6pm to 1am.

Japonesa has cooked Japanese-Peruvian food since 2022, from a menu created by chef Luis Higa, with sushi and donburi next to tiradito, a Peruvian raw fish dish. It is on Don Pedro, across from Bibio, so wine after dinner is a few steps away. 5658 Don Pedro Street, corner Jacobo. ₱₱₱. Good to know: happy hour runs 5pm to 7pm, Monday to Thursday.

For a cheap, loud, late night

Tambai Yakitori Snackhouse is the Poblacion classic: a former sari-sari store (a small neighbourhood shop) on Felipe Street turned into a yakitori bar, grilling skewers over charcoal, with beer, plastic stools and a crowd on the street. 5779 Felipe Street. ₱. Good to know: it fills fast on weekends, so go early or be ready to wait.

El Chupacabra has served street tacos on the corner of Felipe and Polaris for years and is where many Poblacion nights end. Tacos, nachos and margaritas, tables that spill onto the street, and a kitchen that runs late. It also has plant-based options. 5782 Felipe Street, corner Polaris, near Tambai. ₱₱.

Super Uncle Claypot makes Cantonese claypot rice on Enriquez Street, a tribute to the Guangzhou cook behind Chao Ji Claypot Rice, who taught the founders his method. Each pot is cooked to order, so expect a 20 to 30 minute wait. It stays open until 2am on Friday and Saturday, so it is a warm, filling stop between bars. 5887 Enriquez Street. ₱₱.

The Filling Station is a 24-hour American diner on P. Burgos, done as a full 1950s period piece with neon and memorabilia. Milkshakes, burgers and breakfast at four in the morning, when almost everything else is closed. 5012 P. Burgos Street. ₱₱.

Which streets, and how a night flows

Most of these picks are in the quieter interior blocks. P. Burgos, closer to Makati Avenue, has an older and louder nightlife of its own; The Filling Station is there.

A simple plan for a first visit: dinner at Lampara or Japonesa around 7pm, a cocktail at Run Rabbit Run or The Spirits Library, records at OTO or wine at Bibio, then skewers at Tambai or tacos at El Chupacabra. Every step is a short walk. If you also want the city's other cocktail areas, Legazpi and Salcedo are 10 to 15 minutes away by car; see our eat and drink hub.

Before you go

  • Getting there. Take a car or Grab. From Salcedo or Legazpi Village it is 10 to 20 minutes; from Rockwell, 5 to 10 minutes; from BGC (Bonifacio Global City), 20 to 40 minutes via Kalayaan Avenue depending on traffic. Ortigas is 30 to 60 minutes on a Friday evening. Parking on the narrow streets is scarce, so leave the car at home if you can.
  • Getting home. After midnight on Friday and Saturday, cars crawl through the inner streets and booking can take a while. Walk out to Makati Avenue or Kalayaan Avenue for an easier pickup.
  • When to go. Thursday to Saturday is busy from about 9pm. Sunday to Wednesday is calmer, which is the best time for the cocktail bars and for OTO.
  • Booking. For The Spirits Library and Run Rabbit Run on a weekend, book or call ahead. Tambai, El Chupacabra and the casual spots are walk-in.
  • Safety and crowds. The streets are busy and generally friendly, but the known risk is phone snatching on dark side streets late at night. Keep your phone in your hand or a front pocket, watch bags in tight crowds, and book a ride rather than walking side streets after 2am.
  • Payment. Many sit-down bars and restaurants accept cards. Carry some cash and have GCash ready for smaller spots and street food.
  • Dress. There is no real dress code in Poblacion. Wear shoes you can walk in; the pavements are uneven.

Questions people ask

What is the best bar in Poblacion?

The Spirits Library is the most awarded right now: it entered the Asia's 50 Best Bars extended list at No. 98 in July 2026. For a more relaxed cocktail, Run Rabbit Run is the long-standing favourite, and OTO is the pick if music matters most.

Is Poblacion, Makati safe at night?

Poblacion is busy and well used at night, and most visits pass without trouble. The main risk is petty theft, especially phone snatching on dark side streets after 2am, so keep phones and bags close and book a Grab rather than walking long side streets late.

What time do bars in Poblacion close?

It depends on the bar. Many close at 1am or 2am. On Friday and Saturday, The Spirits Library and Run Rabbit Run run to 3am and Polilya to 4am, and The Filling Station is open 24 hours.

How do I get to Poblacion from BGC?

Take a car or Grab along Kalayaan Avenue. It takes about 20 minutes with light traffic and 40 minutes or more on a Friday evening. There is no direct train; Guadalupe, the nearest MRT-3 (Metro Rail Transit Line 3) station, is still a short ride away.

Is Poblacion expensive?

It covers every budget. Tambai and El Chupacabra are among the cheapest good nights out in Makati, while the cocktail bars and restaurants like Rekdi cost more.
